PostHeaderIcon Scoring In Gin Rummy

The purpose of each individual hand in Gin is to win that particular hand, however the main goal is to win the entire game.  This is done by using sound strategy and building up your individual hand scores.

The usual point total to win for Gin Rummy is 250 points, this total can vary depending on who you are playing with, but for competitive game of Gin rummy, the total will always be 250 points.  The way that someone gets to the total is building up their points for each individual hand and adding up them up to get the winning score of 250.  A player can score points by knocking before your opponent does, and you also can earn bonus points in each round as well.  You can get bonus points in this game by going gin or under knocking an opponent.

During the game, if a player knocks, they will put their melded cards which will have no value; the totals of the player will only be accumulated by cards that are unmelded or unmatched.  For example, if a player melds with three Jacks and three Queens and is left with a five, a two, and two aces, they are left with 9 points.  At this point the opponent will show the cards that they have left, they would first put down any melds that they have at that moment and then add to any existing melds from the knocker, if they are unable to add to the two melds that have been laid down, the point totals for those cards are added to give the player their score.  The way the scoring works from there is if the knocker’s value is less then the opponent, they would subtract their total from their opponent to give them a round value.  Every hand is done this way unless a player goes gin or the opponent under knocks.

If a player goes gin, the player would receive the point total for the unmelded cards in the opponent’s hand and also the bonus points that were pre-established for having gin.  If a player knocks, but their opponent is able to under knock them, they would receive the difference in points plus the pre-established under knock bonus, if they tied, the player would only receive the under knock bonus.
