Luck vs. Skill
Luck and skill is involved with every card game and this is no different for the game of Gin Rummy. However, it is widely believed that skill is a much greater element in this game than any other card game played today. Gin Rummy used to be considered a fun game to play with family and friends, however in recent years with the advent of online play; the game has become very competitive by players of all skill levels.
The reason that Gin rummy requires so much skill is because a decision is required on almost every card that is played and you have to be able to react to any situation and this is especially true when you are playing Gin when money is on the line. The game is played with much more strategy when there is money at stake, and luck becomes less of a factor in these situations. It is a fact of any card game though, that a player will run into a streak of good or bad luck. Some of these streaks can last up to a couple of months. What separates a regular player from a highly skilled player is how much the player can get out of their cards during this winning streak and on the other side how much they can protect their losses during a bad streak. The expert player takes full advantage of these situations by knowing that they are able to bounce out of these.
You will be able to notice a lot of times when you are on an exceptional good streak that even when you discard cards that a player obviously needs and the opponent passes them over. Another situation that arises is when you are chasing a running meld and the card you need is in the middle and the card comes up as soon as it is needed. On the flip side, this can be seen when on a bad streak, you will throw away the card that seems like the safest card to throw away, however your opponent will pick it up and go Gin. Good streaks and bad streaks are seen by all players, but the expert player will be able to manage their luck and skill during these times.
